The PTCE is a computer-based exam administered at Pearson VUE test centers nationwide. The PTCE is a two hour, multiple-choice, exam that contains 90 questions: 80 scored questions and 10 un-scored questions. Each question lists four possible answers, only one of which is the correct or best answer. Un-scored questions are not identified and are randomly distributed throughout the exam. A candidate’s exam score is based on the responses to the 80 scored questions. One hour and 50 minutes are allotted for answering the exam questions and 10 minutes for a tutorial and post-exam survey. Over 620,000 individuals have taken the PTCE, and the passing rate is approximately 75%.
The PTCE contains questions in three job function areas. A short description of the three areas and the percentage of questions allocated to each area (current test blueprint) are below:
- Assisting the pharmacist in serving patients (66% of the exam)
- Maintaining medication and inventory control systems (22% of the exam)
- Participating in the administration and management of pharmacy practice (12% of the exam)
Questions are not presented in the function area order shown above; they are randomly distributed throughout the exam. A complete version of the content outline, which lists the knowledge required to perform the activities associated with each function, can be found using the following links:
